The market was real before the ghosts were

The film is about ghosts. The market is not. Before anything was designed, three weeks went into walking one market in north Kolkata between nine at night and two in the morning, photographing stalls and asking the people behind them what they had seen.

What the photographs were for

Every stall in the film is a stall that exists. The fruit seller with the bicycle lamp, the man selling single cigarettes out of a tin, the corner where two lanes meet and nobody stands. They are drawn from the photographs rather than invented, which means the film gets its strangeness from the place instead of from the design.

What the vendors said

Almost everyone had a story about the market after hours, and almost nobody offered it as a ghost story. They were told as complaints — about noise, about things moved, about a customer who did not pay and could not be found.

That tone is what the film is trying to keep. Not a haunting. An inconvenience.

What is still missing

The animatic plays up to the point where the boy understands what he has bought, and then it stops. We know what the market is. We do not yet know what he does about it. That is what the next room is for.
