What the room is
A room works through a set of tasks on one project — a scene that plays flat, a sequence with no joke in it, a beat that works on the page and dies on screen. Everyone takes on the same scenes, pages are read against the boards, and what holds gets folded into the script and broken down shot by shot. Anything made in the room, and any idea from it that is used, is owned by the studio; credit is agreed with you if it is used.
What the room works on
Scenes
Making them play
A scene can be correct and still be dull. The room finds what the scene is actually about and writes it again until it holds.Business
Jokes and behaviour
The gags, the physical business, the small choices a character makes. In animation this is most of what an audience remembers.Shots
Breaking it down
The scenes that hold get broken down shot by shot, so the writing carries into layout instead of stopping at the page.Who can apply
